Eyelash Extension Questions, Answered

Need a few answers before you can commit to eyelash extensions? It can be hard to find the right information you need, and sometimes you don’t have the time to ring up an eyelash technician to talk about it! Thicker and longer eyelashes don’t have to be so mysterious.

Here are the most common questions we’ve heard about lash extensions, for the curious, confused, wary, and intrigued! If you have a problem you can’t find in this article, send us an email or give us a call and we’ll answer it for you.

Who can’t get eyelash extensions?

While lash extensions look beautiful on just about everyone, there are a few people out there who should avoid the procedure. If you spot yourself on this list then you may have to skip the extensions or hold out for a bit:

Avoid eyelash extensions if you’ve:

  • Recently experienced a style, irritation, pink eye (conjunctivitis),
  • Taking eye medications or have eye allergies,
  • Recently had:
    • LASIK eye surgery,
    • Permanent makeup application, or
    • Chemotherapy,
  • Taking Accutane or Retin-A.

Do lash extensions damage your natural lashes?

When applied correctly, at an appropriate length, weight, and thickness for your natural eyelashes, lash extensions will not do any damage at all. This is the reason why it’s important to see an eyelash technician who’s received specific training in eyelash extension procedure.

When you come in for a consultation in Whiplash, we’ll recommend a maximum length and thickness that’s appropriate for your lashes. As long as you’ve got an appropriate size and weight, then your natural eyelashes will regrow as usual.

This is where it’s important to be patient – if you have thin, sparse eyelashes then don’t go for thick, heavy extensions. Instead, work your way up by using lighter lash extensions and a serum to strengthen your own natural eyelashes. With time, your natural lashes will be able to handle heavier and thicker extensions, giving you that look you’re going for without damaging your lashes in the process.

Can I get eyelash extensions if I’m pregnant?

If you have been a long-time fan of eyelash extensions and confident in the fact that you have no allergies or complications with the procedure, then it should be fine. Lash extensions will have little effect on the growth of your baby. That said, there are a few considerations to keep in mind before you make an appointment:

  1. Remember that when you’re pregnant your hormones are changing. This means there’s a possibility that your eyelashes may fall out faster than normal (so the extensions wouldn’t stay in as long),
  2. It’s also important to note that the body goes through lots of changes during pregnancy, so even if you experienced no reaction previously, you may be more sensitive while pregnant,
  3. Finally – keep in mind that you will be laying on your back for quite a while!

We do not recommend trying eyelash extensions for the first time when pregnant because if in the very rare case that you are allergic to the extensions you may not be able to take the required antihistamines during your pregnancy

How do I make my lash extensions last longer?

The better you care for them, the longer your lash extensions will last. Generally, there are a few things you can do that make a huge difference in the lifespan of eyelash extensions:

  1. Keep them dry for an absolute minimum of 24 hours after application. This includes showers, sweating, rain, steam (e.g. saunas), and even being outside on a super humid day,
  2. Use only oil-free makeup products & makeup removers,
  3. Don’t rub, pull, or use eyelash curlers on your lashes,
  4. Dry brush with a lash-wand and cleanse multiple times a week (we’ll give you the detailed low down after your appointment).

The reason lash extensions are so popular is that they’re so safe, easy, and painless (with incredible results). Come and see the transformation for yourself! We’re offering all new clients to our Cronulla salon 15% off any set of eyelash extensions.
